Can Repair Shops Fix Software Problems?

June 2026 · 4 min read · By Curbside Phone Tech

Yes — for many common software issues, a repair shop is exactly the right call. But software has limits that hardware doesn't. Here's what's fixable, what's yours to sort out, and what requires Apple or Samsung.

What we can fix

IssueFixable?
Phone stuck on boot loop (keeps restarting)Yes
Factory reset and data wipeYes
Forcing a software update that's failingYes
Phone stuck on Apple/Android logoUsually yes
Recovery mode / DFU restore (iPhone)Yes
App crashes (specific app)Yes (app-level)
iCloud lock / Activation LockNo — requires Apple ID owner
Account recovery (forgot Apple ID/Google)No — requires Apple/Google
FRP (Factory Reset Protection) bypassNo — requires Google account owner
iOS bug introduced by Apple updateNo — Apple must patch

Boot loops and stuck screens

A phone that restarts repeatedly or gets stuck on the Apple logo or Android boot screen is often a corrupted software state. We can perform recovery mode or DFU mode restores that reload the operating system cleanly — without needing Apple's involvement or an Apple Store appointment. This typically takes 30–45 minutes on-site.

Factory resets

If a phone is sluggish, has persistent app crashes, or a mystery bug that persists after updates, a factory reset to a clean OS often fixes it. We walk through backup first so nothing is lost, then do the reset on-site.

What we can't do: account locks

iCloud Activation Lock and Android FRP are security features Apple and Google built specifically so that no one — not even a repair shop — can bypass them without the original account credentials. If you're locked out of your own device, the path is through Apple Support or Google Account recovery. We can assist you in starting that process, but we cannot bypass these protections ourselves.

What about malware or viruses?

On iPhone, malware on a non-jailbroken device is essentially impossible — the iOS sandboxing model prevents it. On Android it's possible but uncommon if you only install apps from the Play Store. If you suspect malware, a factory reset and clean reinstall eliminates it completely — and that we can do.
