Phone Problems That Don't Need a Repair Shop
June 2026 · 5 min read · By Curbside Phone Tech
We're a repair shop — and we're telling you to try these yourself first. These are the most common phone complaints that resolve with a free 2-minute fix and don't need to be repaired.
Frozen or unresponsive screen
Fix: Force restart. On iPhone 8+: quick press Vol Up, quick press Vol Down, hold Side button. On Samsung: hold Vol Down + Power 10 seconds.
Call us if: freeze happens weekly, dead zone won't respond after restart, or there's physical screen damage.
Muffled or quiet speaker
Fix: Use a dry soft-bristle toothbrush to clean the speaker grille. Lint and debris block the mesh far more often than hardware failure causes quiet audio.
Call us if: speaker is completely silent after cleaning and restart, or sounds crackly/distorted.
Phone won't charge
Fix: Inspect port with a flashlight for lint. Use a dry wooden toothpick to gently remove compacted debris. Try a different cable and charger.
Call us if: port is clean and clear but still won't charge, or error messages appear.
Slow performance / phone feels sluggish
Fix: Restart the phone. Clear the RAM (varies by model). Delete unused apps. Check battery health — a degraded battery at 70% can cause iOS to throttle performance.
Call us if: sluggishness remains after restart and battery health is above 80%. Might be a more complex software issue.
Battery draining way too fast
Fix: Check Settings → Battery for background app drain. Turn off Background App Refresh for apps you don't need it for. Lower screen brightness. Check if a specific app is consuming excessive battery.
Call us if: battery health is below 80%. A replacement will solve fast drain better than any settings change.
Blurry camera photos
Fix: Clean the lens with a microfiber cloth. A fingerprint smear causes "blurry camera" complaints constantly. Also restart the Camera app and the phone.
Call us if: camera is blurry even with a clean lens, won't focus at all, or shows black screen.
Can't hear callers (earpiece quiet)
Fix: Check that call volume is turned up (volume buttons during a call). Clean the earpiece grille. Check if the issue happens with speakerphone too — if speakerphone is fine, it's the earpiece specifically.
Call us if: earpiece is completely silent after these steps.
WiFi or cellular keeps dropping
Fix: Toggle Airplane Mode on for 30 seconds, then off. Forget and re-add the WiFi network. Reset network settings (Settings → General → Transfer or Reset iPhone → Reset Network Settings).
Call us if: the WiFi option has completely disappeared from Settings — that's a hardware issue.
