About 70% of frozen or unresponsive screens are software crashes, not hardware failure — and they're fixed in 30 seconds with a force restart. Here's how to diagnose which you're dealing with.
Quickly press and release Volume Up → quickly press and release Volume Down → press and hold the Side button until you see the Apple logo. Release.
Hold Volume Down + Side button simultaneously for 10 seconds until Apple logo appears.
Hold Volume Down + Power button simultaneously for 10 seconds. The screen will turn off and restart.
The screen froze from a software crash — an app or iOS/Android process hung and locked the interface. This is normal and occasional. If it happens repeatedly (more than once a week), check for pending app updates or an iOS/Android update that might include a stability fix.
Now it's a hardware diagnosis. Test these:
If you see dark patches radiating from a crack, that's the LCD underneath failing. LCD bleed spreads. What's a $139 repair today becomes a more complex situation if the LCD damage reaches critical components. A cracked screen with LCD bleed needs to be repaired soon.
Ghost touches — the screen registering taps you didn't make — usually come from: a cracked screen where broken glass creates false inputs, moisture under the screen, or a failing digitizer. Remove the screen protector and dry the phone in a low-humidity environment to rule out moisture first. If still happening, it's a screen replacement.
