When a repair shop says "we use quality parts," that phrase covers a spectrum from near-identical to the original to noticeably inferior. Here's what the tiers actually mean — and the question to ask your repair shop before committing.
OEM parts are made by the same manufacturer that supplied Apple or Samsung for the original device, or by Apple/Samsung directly. On iPhones, this means the same Samsung or LG OLED panels used in production. On Galaxy phones, it means Samsung-spec displays.
OEM parts deliver: identical color accuracy, full ProMotion (120Hz) on Pro models, True Tone compatibility, same touch sensitivity and latency, original brightness levels. They cost the most — both for the shop and therefore for you — but perform identically to the original screen.
OEM-grade parts are manufactured to Apple or Samsung specifications, often in the same factories, sold through third-party channels. They're 90–95% of the original quality. Brightness, color accuracy, and touch sensitivity are very close to OEM but may differ slightly in calibration. This is the tier most reputable independent shops use, including us.
The benefit: significantly lower cost than going through Apple directly, with quality that most people can't distinguish from the original in everyday use. The tradeoff: very minor deviations in color temperature on some models (most users don't notice).
The cheapest category. These parts often arrive from secondary suppliers with inconsistent quality control. Budget screens may be: noticeably dimmer, less accurate in color, slower in touch response, shorter-lived (some fail within 6–12 months). Reputable shops don't use these — the warranty callbacks aren't worth the part savings.
You'll mostly find budget parts in very cheap repair quotes. If a shop is charging $60 for an iPhone 14 screen repair, budget parts are almost certainly involved.
| Tier | Quality | Lifespan | Price impact |
|---|---|---|---|
| OEM | Identical to original | 3–5+ years | Highest |
| OEM-grade | 90–95% of original | 2–4 years | Moderate |
| Budget aftermarket | Noticeably lower | 6–18 months | Lowest |
Ask directly: "What parts tier do you use for screen replacements?" A good shop answers this without hesitation. "OEM-grade" or "premium aftermarket" is a solid answer. "We use the best parts" without specifics is a dodge. If they can't tell you the tier, assume budget.
We use OEM-grade displays on all screen replacements and are transparent about it before starting. We offer a budget option on request and will explain the exact difference for your model so you can choose with full information.
